Success at the Summer of Service Kick-off

Written by guest blogger Kendal B., one of our great AmeriCorps VISTAs.

I had a blast on Saturday during United Way of Utah County’s Summer of Service Kick-off! I hope everyone else did too!

Nearly 50 volunteers from the community came together on Saturday to celebrate the beginning of United Way of Utah County’s annual Summer of Service program for youth!  Youth of all ages, from elementary school to college freshmen, joined in the fun. We ate breakfast (donated by Einstein’s Bagels and Fresh Market in Provo), had a thought on service, played a get to know you game and then went to work pulling weeds, picking up trash and putting mulch in the trees for Orem City. All of the volunteers enjoyed working together and getting their hands dirty out in the lovely spring weather. It was the perfect way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday morning!

What I loved most was seeing everyone having fun and getting to know new people, while at the same time serving their community. That’s what Summer of Service is all about, and that’s what it means to LIVE UNITED!

Check out the Summer of Service Facebook page for more pictures and information about upcoming events. And if you would like to join us in future Summer of Service projects, send an email to receive emails about upcoming events.

I am excited for the fun Summer of Service projects that will continue throughout June, July and August. All youth 18 years old and younger* are invited to participate!
