January's How I LIVE UNITED: Give

Each month, we spotlight someone from our community who is LIVING UNITED by choosing to Give, Advocate or Volunteer.

Zaida Allred has not always been able to give. After moving to the United States with her five-year-old daughter in 1993, Allred had a difficult time finding work. Though she would have much rather given than received, Allred found herself in need of assistance. It was then that she was referred to United Way of Utah County's Sub for Santa program. "Sub for Santa provided us with support and security," Allred said. "Because Sub for Santa provided us with Christmas, I was able to support my daughter in school and sports. Because she was able to stay involved in good activities, my daughter was able to stay out of trouble." It was this feeling of support and security that inspired Allred to become a Sub for Santa sponsor years later. "There are mothers who need help like I did, and children who need help like my child; I want to be able to help them," Allred said. Allred chose to give to Sub for Santa because she feels it is a great program for the community. "It helps the children, the parents and the sponsors," Allred said. "There are people who really need help. Those are the people who it's benefitting the most, especially the children." Allred believes it is important to take the time to notice the needs of others and provide for them as best you can. She loves to arrange flowers and makes bouquets for the elderly people in her church congregation. Allred hopes to continue giving for as long as she can. She also plans to give her time at other nonprofits in Utah County and Salt Lake City. Allred loves how she feels when she helps others and thinks it is important to give. "There is a saying," Allred said. "You can give, and God will give." For more information on United Way of Utah County and its Sub for Santa program, visit our site or call 801-374-2588.
